Pope Francis has declared 2025 the Year of the Jubilee, calling on us to be “Pilgrims of Hope.” Echoing the Jubilee campaign of 2000, he asks us to “forgive the debts of countries that will never be able to repay them.” ​

Development & Peace is the official international development organization of the Catholic Church of Canada, a movement for global solidarity rooted in Catholic Social teachings. It helps marginalized populations on a daily basis by supporting partners in developing countries.

Sunday, March 16th of LENT 2025 -   
Development and Peace also provides humanitarian aid to countries in crisis. Aid can take the form of immediate humanitarian relief, such as responding to the crisis in the Middle East and to earthquake victims in Nepal, rebuilding homes and community infrastructure and supporting the relaunch of  local economies. 
A story about success The tsunami that destroyed the coastline of the Indian Ocean on December 26, 2004 is considered the worst natural disaster in modern history. The Province of Aceh, in northeast Indonesia, was the area hardest-hit. Approximately 160,000 people died, thousands of homes were destroyed and dozens of villages were literally wiped off the map. Faced with such massive destruction, hundreds of international relief organizations and millions of dollars in emergency aid flooded into Aceh. When people talk about successful aid projects in Aceh, the example they cite is the one managed by the Indonesian NGO, UPLINK. With help from the Canadian organization, Development and Peace, it succeeded in just over two years in building 3,300 homes - all of them occupied - as well as roads and other infrastructure for 23 villages levelled by the tsunami. Through comments from the principal players, this film recounts the story of what happened and reveals the key to the project’s success: an approach based on community organization and active involvement by the people living there. Their experience serves as a telling example for individuals and organizations everywhere who are interested in development and emergency relief operations around the world. Development and Peace works to build a world of justice and peace.
There are many ways to act in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in poorer countries of the world and participating in our awareness-raising, mobilization and fundraising campaigns is one of them!
Next weekend, St. Augustine's will have its annual
"Share Lent" collection for Development and Peace. ​
If you use the 2025 "Sunday Offering Envelopes" there is a specific envelope for this in your package. Otherwise, you can put your offering into a blank envelope marked "St. Augustine Church  for Development & Peace Donation" into the collection plate.
